Benefits of adding sockets to your kitchen in Norwich

Planning the layout of extra sockets in your kitchen means you can cook using multiple appliances with ease, in the modern day where we use air fryers, slow cookers, food processors to name a few - it can become increasingly difficult to continue working in the same lay-out that your kitchen had when you first brought it.

What are the benefits of adding sockets to your kitchen?

If you’re someone who doesn’t just use your oven to cook and also relies on other cooking appliances, installing extra sockets to the kitchen can really improve the flow of your kitchen. Following your natural habits that you tend to show when cooking and preparing food makes much more sense rather than simply just putting up with the outdated socket installation that was already in your kitchen when you moved in.

We recently visited a customer's 2 bed Victorian terrace home on Britannia Road, Norwich the property has a galley kitchen. The homeowner has lived in the property 4 years and has found themselves becoming increasingly frustrated by the poor layout of the current electrics. This particularly frustrates her when winter arrives and she wants to use both the slow cooker and the airfryer but finds they don't both fit next to the only free plug socket in the kitchen. The customer called us out to see if we could install an extra socket in a  more convenient location - we could! We carried out an installation of a new double socket in the area where she keeps the air fryer when not in use - this meant no more lugging it about and gadget tetris!

Installing extra sockets also prevents the risk of overloading circuits as a lot of kitchen appliances tend to draw a lot of power and using extension leads in the kitchen isn’t recommended.

If you’re someone with a coffee machine, a wine fridge or maybe you find yourself using certain worktop spaces for particular activities such as baking - adding sockets to your kitchen allows you to create allocated zones for each activity, making the kitchen much more streamlined and sufficient.

What to consider when adding sockets to your kitchen?

When planning the layout of additional kitchen sockets, it’s important to factor in the safety recommendations for the distance between sockets and open elements such as water or fire. For example if you’re installing sockets that are near a sink they should be at least 30cm away from the sink, horizontally so that there isn’t a risk of water coming into contact with the electrics.

It’s also required that any socket outlets you install in your kitchen should have residual current device (RCD) protection - as this is what’s going to protect you should a fault be detected. RCD’s essentially cut power within milliseconds to protect you and a family from potential shock or fire.

Of course, we here at Norfolk Current can talk you through all of this and help you come up with a plan that both fits your lifestyle and daily habits whilst still ensuring they are safety compliant.
